DAYTON, OH — June 9, 2025 — Residents across the Miami Valley should keep umbrellas and weather alerts close at hand today, as morning showers and scattered thunderstorms roll through the region. Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini Ritz said that while most storms should remain below severe limits, some isolated severe weather can’t be ruled out.
“An isolated severe storm with damaging winds or small hail is possible,” Ritz noted. “The best chance will be southeast of Dayton.”
What to Expect Today
The day began with scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder, with more isolated storms expected to develop throughout the afternoon. According to Ritz, these showers and thunderstorms should move faster than the slow-moving systems that lingered over the weekend, but the risk of flash flooding remains due to already saturated ground.
“Any heavy rain could cause flash flooding concerns due to excessive amounts from previous storms,” Ritz cautioned.
Areas that experienced repeated rainfall over the last several days will be particularly vulnerable.
Looking Ahead: Smoke and Air Quality Concerns
Storm Center 7 is also monitoring deteriorating air quality across the region this weekend, with a plume of Canadian wildfire smoke forecast to move into the area. Officials are warning of potential health impacts, especially for those with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and young children.
Air quality alerts may be issued in the coming days. Residents are encouraged to limit prolonged outdoor activity if haze becomes visible or air quality readings worsen.
