Rwandan immigrant arrested, accused of genocide, and lying for US visa

According to the Department of Justice, a Rwandan immigrant was detained earlier this week in Dayton for allegedly falsifying his immigration documents and concealing his role in the Rwandan genocide.

Vincent Nzigiymfura, also known as Vincent Mfura, has been charged with visa fraud and two counts of attempted naturalization fraud, according to the Justice Department.

“As alleged, Vincent Nzigiyimfura directed and encouraged murders during the Rwandan genocide and then lied to U.S. authorities to start a new life in this country,” said Matthew Galeotti, head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The United States is not a refuge for human rights abusers. Those, like the defendant, who use immigration fraud to conceal their violent pasts will be charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to the accusation, Nzigiymfura was a businessman and butcher in Rwanda who helped lead the genocide against Tutsis. According to court documents, Nzigiymfura provided weapons and transportation to other Hutus while also planning Tutsi killings.

According to the Department of Justice, Nzigiymfura escaped to Malawi after the slaughter concluded in 1994. Nzigiymfura allegedly filed fraudulent documentation stating that he “left Rwanda in 1994 due to the Genocide.” Since then, Nzigiymfura has reiterated his bogus claims about living in the United States.

If convicted, Nzigiymfura faces 30 years in jail.
