Frozen water bottles, shields used in protest outside Tukwila DHS facility, police say

Frozen water bottles and shields were used in protest outside the Tukwila DHS facility, authorities said

Tukwila police officers assisted federal officers in clearing a blocked road at a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) site Saturday afternoon, after demonstrators barred entry to the property, according to the Tukwila Police Department.

Federal Protective Services (FPS) police summoned officers about 3 p.m. to report that a large group had barricaded themselves inside the DHS facility, blocking the driveway.

Tukwila police officers responded because they have control over the public roadways and walkways surrounding the facility.

According to the police department, officers issued numerous warnings via loudspeakers, directing the throng to leave the driveway and return to the sidewalk or risk arrest. Many people complied and walked to the sidewalk to continue their peaceful protest.

However, police said that other demonstrators, many of whom were clad in black and holding improvised shields, refused to leave the area.

Before authorities arrived, demonstrators reportedly caused property damage by removing street signs and other items to form a roadblock.

The department also reported that spray paint had been used on adjoining property.

According to the police department, many persons threw frozen water bottles and rocks at officers as they sought to remove the barricades.

Officers responded by using pepper spray and PepperBalls to disperse the gathering and reopen the entry.

Federal DHS officers also helped clear the driveway.

Tukwila police made no arrests and reported no injuries.

The police department made it clear that its officers do not participate in immigration enforcement or aid in questioning people based on their immigration status or nationality.

The agency stated that its activities were in compliance with Washington state law and department policies.
