First 90° Day Hits Gaithersburg — Families Flock to Pools, Experts Urge Caution

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Thursday marked the first 90-degree day of 2025 in the Gaithersburg area, with temperatures soaring to 94°F and humidity making conditions even more oppressive. Families took full advantage of neighborhood pools to cool off, while health officials issued reminders to stay hydrated and safe.

💧 Families Beat the Heat at the Pool

Matt Michelson and his family headed straight to their local pool.

“When it’s 94 degrees outside, it’s important to stay cool,” Michelson said. “We brought our family to take a dip and relax.”

11-year-old Ellie Simpson agreed.

“It’s so hot… it feels good to be in the pool!”

🩺 Expert Advice on Staying Safe

Dr. Jonathan Wenk, Medical Director at White Oak Adventist Medical Center, emphasized the risks of heat-related illness and the importance of hydration and rest.

“Try to stay indoors where it’s cool,” Wenk said. “You need 8–10 glasses of water a day, or more if you’re outside. Pools and splash pads are great options.”

He added a special warning for elderly residents across the DMV (D.C.-Maryland-Virginia) region:

“Seniors should avoid going out in the midday heat. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.”

🧊 Quick Tips for Hot Weather Safety

  • Hydrate frequently — even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Take breaks in the shade or indoors if you’re outdoors for long periods.
  • Wear light clothing and sunscreen.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable loved ones.

With more hot days ahead, residents are encouraged to stay cool, stay informed, and enjoy safe summer activities.
