Crane collapse on Florida's Merritt Island killed two construction workers

According to accounts, two construction workers were killed Wednesday when a crane toppled at the site of a new hospital on Florida’s Merritt Island.

The crane toppled at 2 p.m. on Health First’s unfinished Cape Canaveral Hospital at 255 Borman Dr., according to Spectrum News.

According to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Tod Goodyear, the two workers were transported to a local hospital and perished as a result of their injuries. Their names have not been revealed pending notification to their families.

According to local weather reports, Central Florida has seen a lot of rain and thunderstorms today. On Wednesday, Brevard County recorded wind gusts ranging from 50 to 60 mph.

News Six meteorologists estimated a wind gust of 58 mph at the time of the accident.

Authorities have not provided an official cause for the crane’s fall.

The hospital, which will replace an existing Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, is set to open in 2027, Florida Today reports. Construction on the new $410 million hospital began in March 2024.
