Additional Charges Filed Against Driver in Crash That Killed South Fulton Police Captain

FULTON COUNTY, GA — June 9, 2025 — A woman accused of causing a deadly crash that killed South Fulton Police Captain Helio Armando Garcia III now faces additional charges, following an emotional court hearing on Monday where new details — and painful footage — were revealed.

Santoria McLean, who was driving over 100 mph while allegedly under the influence, has now been charged with eight counts related to the April 15 collision that took the life of the veteran officer. The charges include vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and erratic lane change, among others.

Emotional Day in Court

Family members of Captain Garcia, including his widow Eliana Garcia, filled the courtroom in Fulton County and became visibly emotional during the hearing. The tension reached a peak when the prosecution played dashcam video from the night of the crash, showing the moment of impact.

“I’m here for my husband,” said Eliana Garcia. “I have to fight for him till the last moment until this case is over. It’s very hard seeing that video knowing he fought.”

In a heartbreaking revelation, investigators shared that Captain Garcia survived the initial collision and managed to exit his patrol car. However, he later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Crash Details and Investigation

According to authorities, Captain Garcia was on duty, driving his patrol vehicle on Flat Shoals Road near Connell Road, when McLean’s vehicle veered into his lane and struck him head-on. Investigators say McLean was driving erratically at excessive speeds, and toxicology reports suggest she was under the influence at the time.

McLean was hospitalized for a month with serious injuries sustained in the crash and was later booked into the Fulton County Jail on May 15. She remains in a wheelchair and appeared in court Monday alongside her defense team.

During the hearing, McLean’s attorney questioned state troopers about potential mishandling of the crash scene, specifically whether any evidence was moved prior to the accident reconstruction team’s arrival. Troopers testified that nothing had been altered.

What’s Next?

With the case now moving forward under heightened charges, a trial date has not yet been set. Prosecutors say they plan to pursue the maximum penalty available under Georgia law. The district attorney’s office has not ruled out the possibility of additional charges, pending further toxicology analysis.

Captain Garcia, a respected law enforcement officer, had served the South Fulton Police Department with distinction and was known for his commitment to community safety and mentorship of younger officers.
