Couple Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide Before Graduation Party

DOVER TOWNSHIP, OH – A 54-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman were found dead Sunday afternoon in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide at their home, just before a graduation party was scheduled to begin on the property.

Incident Details

Tuscarawas County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. to a residence in the 2000 block of Gordon Road Northwest following reports of gunshots.

  • The caller, preparing for a graduation party for another household member, reported hearing gunshots inside the home
  • The man, identified as Robert Houston, 64, reportedly shot his wife, April Houston, 53, before turning the weapon on himself
  • Deputies found Robert Houston deceased on his bed, and April Houston lying nearby on the floor
  • Emergency responders transported April Houston to a Canton hospital where she was later pronounced dead

Investigation Status

Authorities say preliminary evidence and witness statements suggest murder-suicide as the most likely explanation. The graduation party honoree was not home during the incident.

Because Robert Houston died in Tuscarawas County and April Houston in Stark County, coroner offices from both counties are collaborating to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Community Impact

The tragedy shocked neighbors and family members preparing to celebrate a milestone event. Officials continue gathering information and processing evidence.
