EL PASO, Texas— An El Paso Police officer was wounded, and a suspect died, in an officer-involved shooting in El Paso’s Upper Valley on Sunday afternoon, June 1, according to a police spokesperson.
Sgt. Robert Gomez, a police spokesman, said officers responded to reports of a domestic violence incident in progress on the 6400 block of Passo Via Drive at 3:15 p.m. Sunday.
As the officers approached the home, a Hispanic male exited and started fire on them, according to Gomez.
The officers returned fire, he stated.
A female police officer was hit. She was transferred to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition, according to Gomez.
The unidentified Hispanic man was struck during the exchange of gunfire. Gomez claimed he was transferred to a hospital and died there.
Police did not identify the suspect by name or age, citing that the inquiry is still in its early stages.
Three investigations are underway into the shooting: one by the Texas Rangers, one by the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit, and one by the department’s Internal Affairs Department.
The area is scheduled to be closed until Monday morning, with residents let back in on a case-by-case basis.
